The National Bank Open, formerly Rogers Cup

Another final for Medvedev

August 11, 2019

After playing his way into the final in Washington last week, Daniil Medvedev of Russia followed up with a second final appearance at Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

On Saturday evening at IGA Stadium, he showed his countryman Karen Khachanov the door in 86 minutes of action that started out one-sided but metamorphosized into a spectacular match (6-1, 7-5 (6)).

Medvedev secured his ticket to the final without dropping a single set since the start of the tournament.

The eventual winner was absolutely exquisite at the start of the clash, taking only 23 minutes to deprive Khachanov of any chance in the first set. He broke his opponent twice, served better, returned better, triumphantly attacked the net and stayed consistent.

Still, the writing wasn’t yet on the wall. Khachanov seemed to fade a little after being broken but found the courage to fight. At 5-4, 30-15 for Medvedev, he made the most of an error on an easy ball to secure a break and take things into a tiebreaker.

In the end, Medvedev claimed his second win in three duels with Khachanov.

“I had chances to win sooner,” said Medvedev after the match. “I was a break ahead at the start of the second set and again when I served at 5-4. I’m just happy I made it through to play in the final tomorrow.” Medvedev dominated on serve, hitting 89% of his first serves in (versus 59% for Khachanov), and collected 71 points (versus 49).
